Custom Leaf/Branch geometry?

PostFri Feb 16, 2018 1:52 pm

Hey, is there any way to use custom geometry for the leaves or is there a possibility this could
be implemented?

I really appreciate Tree It, I've been looking for a free app that can replace SpeedTree for my purposes
and I'm only missing a few features.

This would be a great option indeed. The current leaves are nice but, for mobile they just create so much overdraw that when adding multiple trees in your project, the fps drop will be that significant so you can only use a few (tested on OculusGo).
If you could create your own leaf shape, that would add more polygons but the overdraw problem is more crippling.

I expect many more people would like this feature in the future (more stand alone VR devices are coming - Quest - who will suffer from the same overdraw problem).

That feature would be really great!
Sometimes a particular shape can make a huge difference in the tree visual.
I'm hope it can be added in futures updates.
Looking forward.

Not sure if I understand this right, but isn't this possible with meshes?
I haven't used the meshes feature, but in theory you will have more control over the geometry. A bit more application switching, maybe / things to keep in the head ;)

or am I getting the problem wrong?

Never made 3d for mobile, but I can easily see that it requires lower polys.
One way is to create the branches/leaves[1] as a .tre file and use the render-to-texture feature. I use this for desktop rendering / game. Requires a bit more training to get it right, though.

See eg. the Beech and the Elm example. Open the tree and tick off meshes, tick on leaves. In the tree folder you'll see the 'source' branch.

Yes, it's possible.
But there are some features that are not available on mesh tab like stem settings, change the pivot, texture rotating, color variation, distortion, gravity control.
Small details that give leaf tab a great control.
